By Dennis Thompson HealthDay ReporterHealthDayMONDAY, March 4, 2024 (HealthDay News) -- Salad lovers, take note: Lettuce is more vulnerable to E. coli contamination than other leafy greens, researchers report. Other leafy greens – spinach, kale and collards – are more resistant to E. coli, a bacteria with toxic strains that can cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. On kale and collards, E. coli grows slower in warmer temperatures, but can survive longer under refrigeration, researchers found. People can protect themselves by rinsing lettuce, Dong said, although she warned that E. coli bacteria tend to attach themselves tightly to lettuce leaves. Consumers also should store their lettuce in the fridge and pay attention to any food safety recalls involving leafy greens, researchers said.

Now, though, a massive new study published in the journal Nature has shed new light on the effect of remote work on innovation. Even though remote work is a relatively new development in corporate settings, scientists and inventors have been collaborating over long distances for decades. On remote teams, by contrast, the more established collaborators tended to come up with the original idea on their own. And just because remote collaboration didn't work for innovation in the past doesn't necessarily mean it won't work in the future. But the study's findings — given the remarkable sweep of the data it examined — do suggest some guidance for companies in the age of remote work.

The children had a high degree of physical contact and care for most of time they were observed. Nikhil ChaudharyResponses to cryingWhat was notable, Chaudhary said, wasn’t necessarily the amount of care children received, but that mothers weren’t responsible for all of it. Other caregivers — fathers, older siblings and nonrelatives — were responsible for 38% to 46% of close care, according to the study. The mean number of caregivers other than a child’s mother was 14.4, but these weren’t all adults. “How representative would a day care center with 18 children in inner-city London be of childhood … anywhere?” he asked.

The research sought to answer several questions about paternal participation in breastfeeding and the use of safe sleep practices for babies. And many could do more to support mothers who breastfeed, which can provide key health benefits for babies, the study indicated. The research also found racial disparities in sleep practices, with Black fathers less likely than White fathers to follow those practices. Overall, almost a third of the fathers involved in this survey did not receive enough or any advice about safe sleep practices, according to the study. Previous studies have suggested that fathers can play a key role in helping mothers breastfeed.

Patients are now enrolling in an early stage clinical trial to test a universal flu vaccine based on messenger RNA technology, the National Institutes of Health announced Monday. "A universal flu vaccine could serve as an important line of defense against the spread of a future flu pandemic," Dr. Hugh Auchincloss, acting director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in a statement Monday. The universal flu vaccine trial will enroll up to 50 healthy people ages 18 through 49 to test whether the experimental shot is safe and produces an immune response, according to NIH. The universal shot was developed by researchers at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The dominant flu strains can change between the time when experts select the strains and the manufacturers roll the shots out.

It highlighted the main problem facing reformists in a system where Khamenei, 83 and in power since 1989, wields ultimate power. "People feel reformists helped hardliners by promising reforms that were impossible with hardliners in power," a former official who served in the Khatami administration told Reuters. The reform movement is dead." That view has been echoed in the streets where protesters have grouped reformists with hardliners as part of the problem. The fact is that the reform movement is dead, its has been dead for some time," he said.
